Small but certain happiness
How I've been holding onto tiny joys and delights this past week...
Have you heard of the concept of small but certain happiness?
I came across it this past week via this YouTube video and it resonated straight away.
Instead of waiting for the big and exciting moments in life to bring us joy, we can choose to find peace knowing that there are tiny moments throughout are days that we can know for sure will bring us delight and moments of joy.
I’ve been flaring a lot this past week, with lots of dizziness, vertigo, migraines and fatigue and my body is feeling a little tired and worn down from the realities of living with a chronic illness.
So small but certain happiness each day has been exactly what I’ve needed to move through the frustration and grief of living in a chronically ill body and hold onto all the tiny joys still available to me each day.
Here’s what’s been on my list for the past week:
Listening to a podcast in the bath to start my day 🎙️
I’ve been really loving the That Was Us podcast for any fellow This Is Us fans.
Reading a book in the middle of the day and before bed 📚
I’m currently reading All Fours by Miranda July and it’s SO GOOD.
Daily walks and seeing the early signs of autumn 🍂
My son has been bringing acorns inside that he’s found in the park for the past few weeks now and I’m already very excited to get my autumn and winter clothes out of my underbed storage.
Noah Kahan on repeat 🎶
When my son comes and snuggles up next to me
I’ve had to rest a lot in bed the past week as I’ve been flaring especially in the late afternoon and early evening so I haven’t been a whole lot of fun for my very energetic almost 4 year old but he’ll often come in, snuggle up for a little bit, and bring a book to read together and it always makes my day.
When my dog is very excited to see me when I wake up 🐶
We’re a dog sleeps in the bed with us kind of family (we have a seven year old cavalier king charles spaniel called George) but my husband usually wakes up before me and takes him out of the room with him so when I do wake up for the day George usually runs in and gives me a big cuddle and it’s the sweetest way to start my day.
Voice notes with good friends
I actually HOWLED out loud at a hilarious story my friend Vic told me over voice notes yesterday.
When my husband makes me a tropical fruit smoothie in the morning 🍍
I’m trying to up my fruit and veg intake and morning smoothies are currently my favourite way to do so.
Rewatching The Sex Lives Of College Girls
I saw a new season is coming later this year so I decided to rewatch the first 2 and remembered how funny it was.
When there’s leftovers for dinner so we don’t have to cook 🍛
Even better when there’s enough leftovers for lunch too!
What are moments of small but certain moments of happiness and joy for you this week?
Until next time,
Jen
My small moments of joy were…watching the sky turn pink while waiting for the kettle to boil this morning. Indulging in the taste of morning coffee, sitting in the garden and enjoying the morning stillness. My blind dog Freddy getting excited for his lunchtime walk, dragging me out of the house. Or when I realised the decision I made several months ago, came to fruition today. 🤍
I did not know that there was a This is us podcast! Going to give this a listen/watch straight away!
I'm having a flare week it seems at the moment too, and I really loved reading your small joys, and going to make a little list in my journal to help me find some calm and joy too 🩷
