Absolutely love this concept, Jen, and love how you've applied it to your creative writing practice! If you're up for sharing, I'd love to hear more about how building that habit is going for you — what the challenges are and what you're learning along the way.
I'm in the midst of trying to build a writing habit myself, so this really hit home. It's so easy to cross it off the priority list when life gets busy, but fifteen minutes a day would feel SO much better than zero.
It feels so good just to be making a little space each day to build my creative writing muscle. I find I tend to do it come the evenings once my son is down to bed. It feels doable because it’s just 15 minutes a day and I give myself permission for it to be terrible - just sitting down and writing is the goal. I’m early into building the habit so I haven’t hit any roadblocks yet but I know when I inevitably skip a day it will be important for me to just get back into the flow instead of letting that derail me.
Cheering you on with building your writing habit too!
I love this, Jen! A few weeks ago, we had a lovely conversation on your Substack post about the books you've read. We talked about Abby Jimenez and her writing process. I think so much writing advice out there can be rather inaccessible. You need to write every day, you need to write for at least an hour, you have to write at a desk, etc. I love that Abby makes time for writing when she can when she's on her phone. Little blocks of time do add up! We all spend more time than we'd like on our phones. If we can use some of that time to work on our passion projects, we can be surprised by the results.
I love this idea and agree that little by little things really do add up. I came to the same conclusion a short while ago and set my daily word count goal at 300. Quite often I’ll write more, but 300 always seems manageable and it’s satisfying to see the first draft of my novel grow. Good luck with yours!

I remember! I really am so inspired by Abby Jimenez’s process, feels so much more doable. Little by little it can all add up!

Love this! The little blocks of time very quickly add up!
Little by little is the best piece of advice, especially when writing a novel. Thanks for sharing this, Jen!
