I’m a big fan of Oliver Burkeman’s newsletter. I found it freeing to accept the idea that there is no planner/ app/ list out there that means I’ll finally win at productivity. They might help me stay organised sure, but as he says: as humans we are finite and so is our capacity. Always good to hear you speak about your life and your business with such realism. Thanks
I subscribed yesterday, really looking forward to reading more of his insights. There is just no way to 'win' at productivity is there - and by letting go of that goal we can then focus on doing and discovering what truly works best for us!
I have not long ago bought Oliver's book and reading this piece has just jumped it to the top of my pile, thank you. I'm really keen to work in more concentrated bursts than stretch out my inevitable procrastination!
Less, more focused work time always trumps long stretches of time during which we task-switch and get distracted by all manner of phone notifications, tempting social media sites, etc.
It's why I hated timesheets in my old corporate job. The need to assign every minute of an 8-hour day to work that could be completed in a fraction of the time. Nonsensical!
This is a wonderfully relieving message to hear. The permission to work less.
I want to achieve so many things this year and I find myself often feeling frantic and like I have to do something constantly to grow my freelance writing career, so seeing what is possible if we actually take less time but make it more effective sounds like something I want to try incorporating and putting into practice for my own week as well!
I really enjoyed this post, Jen. I recently found out I’m autistic and am now learning how to work in a better way for me to reduce burnout. It’s so refreshing to read about ways of working that feel spacious, thank you for sharing.

Thanks for this. It is so good to hear how you manage your time within your business and I will add Oliver’s book to my reading list this month. 🤍
So glad you enjoyed this piece, Dawn! I love hearing about how others manage their time too and really looking forward to reading Oliver's book soon!

I'm really looking forward to reading it soon, I think I'm second in the queue now at the library!

That really really does sound nonsensical - it's what I love most about being self-employed, my ability to shape and define my own days!
